The sad part is that it’s not far off the mark. BMW is planning to charge an annual fee for features that the car CAME with when it was bought, such as heated seats and cruise control.
A dealer tried telling my wife that certain items were value added and she had to pay extra for them. She replied “Then take them out” They said they could not, so she said “Then I am buying another brand of car”. They dropped the up charge.
No one wants a stripped down car when the salesman tells them a desirable model is only a few dollars more a month. So that’s how the average car got to $35K.
“Are you crazy, man!!! We’ll take it just as it is! Adding a steering wheel and doors would just take away from our reason for buying it! ADVENTURE DRIVIN’!!
Remember the old days when automatic transmission, power steering and brakes, the radio (later just FM was optional – they all had AM by then) and air conditioning were optional equipment.
I bought a 1970 Corvette in ‘77 and drove it home sitting on a bucket. The seats weren’t finished being reupholstered and I had to get it out of the shop where I bought it. This padded stool looks like an upgrade to the towel I used!

Navigating the different packages can be daunting. Luckily you can do it on the internet before getting into the shark pool.

I remember when power steering, power breaks, motorized windows, and seat belts were options. Times have changes and some of it is better.

A buddy said his car had all the options. . . When I exclaimed REALLY!, he said -“yeah, I never took any off.”

I’ll take it like it is. I really love modding out cars myself!
