So that’s what happened after he dangled the Danegeld.

Quite right, Bill Thompson - never dangle your Danegeld. He got some bad advice, there.

William of Normandy messed things up quite a bit for us Saxons.

Wasn’t Ethelred the Unready the one who spent his wedding night with his new wife … and her mother?

He may have been a Bad King, but was he a Good Thing?

But it wasn’t originally ‘unready’, but ‘unrede’, i.e., ‘without counsel’, or more loosely, ‘without the brains to recognize good advice and follow it’.

We did an event last year to recreate the Danelaw wedding. I made my 10th century outfit and even my leather shoes; other members made the wooden benches and other objects. The cooks researched and prepared dishes to fit, as did the brewers and cheesemakers- It was a very good event!

@ vldazzle - sounds wonderful, but curious what you had for music? Almost no instruments surviving from period except in pictures, and music notation was pretty rough. I’m guessing Scadian Fylk Songs?

Maybe we can talk the Iraqis into paying our armies to come home, and the Afghans too.
