I was once on the set of Road Runner. I got to meet her backstage. I can assure you that while RR might have been a male on screen, off the screen she was female.
Wow… I actually liked this one… that’s been a while and the first favorite add for you Scott. Very true with the characters… though you could have added Big Bird and the Snuffleufogus, or however it’s spelled.
But, I would tend to agree with ^ as Roadrunner was referenced as a he. And in most cases, especially the further you go back, non-determinant genders were always defaulted to being male… as once the use of “man” commonly referred to mankind/humanity (including women) and the like.

What about Lady Ga Ga? The jury is still out on her gender.

Glad I had positive gender role models like Tiny Tim.

Scented Flower, that’s “the artist formerly known as ‘the artist formerly known as Prince’ formally known as Prince”
And try repeating that as a tongue twister.

Yes, LowCbass! I remember Shmoo’s and thought they were wonderful.
Great strip & great art reminders of some great old strips.

And in the Roadrunner comic books he had a wife and two kids (and spoke in rhyme!)

You forgot Tweety. He’s a boy, but many people forget that.

Even Warner’s own marketing forgets that Tweety’s a guy:

Lassie. A female on the show, always portrayed by a male.
The Shmoos were always asexual, even though they apparently expressed love for each other.

I always thought of H.R. Puffinstuff was a bit of a gender bender
