I find maps useful for a large scale overview to plan the outlines of the trip but the details require the timeliness of the gps.

My mom used to hold the map upside down if we were driving south so she could give my dad the correct left/right directions…

I used my Maine Gazetteer map just the other day. No GPS on my car, no cell phone.

And with a bit of vinegar you can use it to clean the windscreen too.

Gray… dude… Rand McNally is still in business. Buy the spiral notebook-sized version of the US Atlas. Easy-peasey!

Back in 2005-2006, I was driving a Semi thru Pennsylvania, and my trucks gps had the shortest route laid out for the city I was headed to. I followed it…right to a bridge that was too low for my truck. Luckily for me, there was a parking lot just before the bridge that I was able to turn around in, and go back to the main highway, using my paper map to do so.

I guess I must be the dinosaur… I still use paper maps and like them just fine. But then I don’t have a smart phone and my only GPS is for airplane use only (and I still use paper charts there too). The neat thing about paper is that the batteries never run out 8^)
