Always admired his work which I’ve found over the years. What a lot of everyday practical and spiritual insight he had while implanted with the troops. It may be cliche to say war changes us, but Pyle was really able to communicate those changes in media res . A remarkable man among the G.I. Joes!
He was quite the human being, not full of crap like some folks. Andy Rooney, in his book, My War, talked about Ernie Pyle, who didn’t even want to kill ants. Then there was Hemingway, who seems to have been a real jerk. Pyle did not have to go to the Pacific Theater, he could have stayed home. But he wanted to tell those guys stories, too.
I came across his grave at the National War Memorial of the Pacific. I had read his books and was very moved that he was there with the people he would write about.

Snoopy, Willie, and Joe are going over to Mauldin’s, to toast Ernie and all those G.I. Joes who served this country.

Ernie meant so much to so many. His work is timeless and an excellent, timeless chronicle of “the Greatest Generation.”

Visit his home (now a library) in New Mexico. It’s a very nice tribute. And, the final resting spot for his dog. One of my heroes. Ernie, not the dog.

Sad, but with today’s media, the guy won’t have a chance. Ernie Pyle a true measure of a man!

Support freedom of the press. Maybe they do not always give you the answer the way you want it. But the responsible ones give you the facts.
