There was once a commercial about that. Happened to my wife once, too. Fortunately in our case the engine didn’t seize……….

I thought only women ignored the check oil light.

Grog: cars of that vintage didn’t have a light indicating low oil level; they only had one indicating low pressure. It was possible to have a shot-glass full of oily foam circulating in the engine under enough pressure to keep the light from coming on. Of course, in those days you bought gas at a full service station (for 29.9 cents a gallon), and the pump jockeys routinely checked the oil at each fill-up, so people rarely ran out.

I was wondering about that, puddleglum1066. I can understand now how it could happen withou full service stations. Cosmo obviously hasn’t bothered to check the oil…perhaps since the demise of the full service station.

I recall being able to go to one in 2003, but when I moved, I never saw one again.

I just lost my car actually because of this exact problem… the crankshaft fused, because I didn’t check the oil. The worst part is that before taking the trip on which it happened, I was thinking “I need to check the oil soon.” Well, turns out I should’ve been thinking that about a week ago!

The “oil” light is STILL for oil PRESSURE, not oil LEVEL.

Will it hurt to run them when they are out of gas? (I actually heard a woman ask this.)

It’s too bad that so many cars these days come with an extra dipstick installed in the driver’s seat.
