I can’t believe the fools actually sent a message on the Voyager and even put a space map to locate earth. Why would anyone in their right mind invite unnecessary extraterrestrial trouble? Any race more advanced than ourselves can just invade and wipe us outta existence. It’s a dangerous delusion to think that extraterrestrials can be benevolent instead of malevolent. It’s better that aliens don’t know about earth. I say, send a mission to retrieve the map on voyager and destroy it. We got enough trouble and invaders on this planet already. No need to invite extraterrestrial threats.
I think Stephen Hawking could have been right, and we should not be advertising earth to our cosmic neighbors. After all they may not be as caring and peaceful as we are.
The problem with SETI radio search is that it will probably only detect intended communication. Ordinary communication becomes compressed as technology improves to the point where it is virtually indistinguishable from noise. Since transmitting a direct signal deliberately is thousands or millions of times more expensive than building a receiver, my guess is that cheapskate civilizations are plentiful but just listening , like us.
I am reminded of the Douglas Adams book where the aliens were explaining to earthlings that they had PLENTY of time to have filed a petition to stop the interstellar by way and if they couldn’t be bothered to travel the few light years – it really was their own fault.

Um … haven’t the crew of the RU Sirius been dealing with extraterrestrial beings and civilizations for a good while now?
BTW: The more correct term for an inhabitant of Earth isn’t “Earthling” but “Terrestrial” or “Terran”.
