My ancestoral home in Japan had many items to remind us of Commodore Perry. One of my favorites was a wood carving of St. Nicholas (with a Japanese beard and eyes) made in 1873 – about 7 years after the Harper’s Nast image of Santa. The artist used the description and what was familiar to him, so Santa had a samurai helmet, and red armor with a huge sack on his back.
Japan’s 200 Year ban on Foreigners was a caused by a combination of Christian Missionaries meddling in Japanese Politics and fears that the Dutch & Portuguese traders would use “Spreading the gospel” as an excuse to turn Japan into a Colony.
So, the various Shoguns banned ALL foreigners to prevent colonization and banned Christianity because it had been introduced by those foreigners. Also, because the Christians, by that time, had become Arrogant and were trying to forceably do away with Bhuddism & Shinto temples.

Everyone’s someone else’s alien, Tanuki. Or mythical being.

Are we about to discover why Tanuki hid from Humans for so many years?
Could it have been because of those “Aliens”?
