I can’t believe how many people suggested places that are looking for part time workers for when I retire in December. I told them that they don’t understand the concept of retirement.
I used to think about a part time job to get away from the dogs for a bit. Moved and I have a 3-car garage to organize. Plus, one of the bays has a platform that has to come out.
my concept of my hubbies retirement is – ‘find yourself something to do that pays your part of the bills, gets your butt OUT of that chair and away from the TV or your retirement is going to be elsewhere’. I DO understand retirement – I do not condone laziness or turning off your brain in front of a TV all day with beer and video games as your companion while I’m working.
Retirement is obviously pointless. That is why he doesn’t see the nonexistent point.
“Mr. Green, when are you going to retire?”
“Retire?? I’m not going to retire. I intend to drive until I drop dead and then I want you to drag my lifeless body out of this seat and drive the bus into Pine Forest High School”
“Well, okay, but teach me how to operate it first.”
(He fully expected it to be soon. That was more than twelve years ago. The DOT physician stopped me before I achieved my goal (some silliness about expecting me to drop dead any minute now, or then or sometime), so now I am in dispatch.)
good for you Fishenguy. Too many people so thoroughly identify with their job that when that ends they are like a plant without water. They just wither. When I retired and people asked what I would do with myself, I was able to say that I had so many interests for which I had never had time, it would be hard to choose.
Retirement means doing things you enjoy. Maybe this is what Frank enjoys. I volunteer for two non-profits doing bookkeeping and computer work. It’s work to some people but I enjoy it.
Watching my parents friends retire was very telling. The men who puttered around home and relaxed almost as a rule died within 5 years of retirement. The ones who got part time jobs, started side hustles or did consulting lived on a long time. And those were the ones whose wives complained they didn’t retire like they were supposed to. It almost makes me suspicious that women want their husbands to kick off early so they get 15+ years not having to deal with them.

When Dot retired she should have left her grammar correcting ways behind. Is that the point?

Poor woman. Her husband loves his old job more than her.

You can take a man out of the job, but you can’t take the job out of the man.
