    As a rule, cats prefer acknowledgement to attention. In an open area, if you get within a couple of feet of a cat, it has to decide whether to leave or approach you. I never walk directly toward a cat; that’s confrontational. Curious cats will approach you, if you are patient. Unfortunately, this leads people to think a cat will act friendly if you have it backed up against a piece of furniture and try to touch it. Ouch!
