Reminds me of the probably apocryphal story about Calvin Coolidge whose reputation as a quiet and even reclusive politician resulted in the nickname “Silent Cal.” Supposedly a woman who sat next to him at a dinner told him that she had made a bet with a friend that she could get Coolidge to say three words, to which he replied “You lose.”
Calvin Coolidge, famous as “silent Cal” for his taciturnity, once was approached at a soirée by the hostess, a famous society lady, who cooed to him, “Mr. President, I have a bet that I can make you say more than three words.” He replied, "You lose. "

I have a student like this. Incredibly intelligent, but will give every reason in the book why he shouldn’t have to do anything.
