Not a whole diet, just a portion.

I laugh at the recommended serving size. Girl scout cookies are the best: they think you’re going to only eat 2 at a time. 2 boxes maybe!

Now, why would any American do what is recommended? That is a complete infringement of their rights!

Once again, moderation in the diet wins.

I have noticed that the recommended serving size has gone down on some foods.

My wife likes to cook and she cooks healthy food and she can make it taste good. My problem isn’t that I eat too much bad food; I eat too much good food: portion distortion.

Part of my problem is that I was raised by Great Depression era parents who, in turn, were raised by east European refugees. Having a lot of food was a sign of prosperity. “Wasting food” (not eating everything on your plate) was a sin. Somehow by cleaning my plate, I kept someone from starving in China. I never did understand that logic, but my mother preached it.

My wife has plastic food (It must have come from a restaurant in Japan). She uses it when she sets up a display on nutrition at health fairs. It shows portion size for various foods. A serving of meat should be about the same size as a pack of cards. When was the last time you had a steak that small?

On the other hand, a serving of fruit is slightly smaller than a baseball, not tennis ball size, or basketball sized (I’ve seen some suspicious things in the produce section of my local store. Can you put plants on steroids?)

Try using a smaller plate at home. At a restaurant, cut the meal in half and take the rest home in a doggie bag.

Try eating only when you are hungry (not when the clock says it’s dinner time) and stop eating when you are no longer hungry. Bear in mind that there is a delay between food in the stomach and the brain getting the message, so eat slowly.

Try doing like some people in Asia do; eat insects. They are high in protein and low in cholesterol. Yes, you can eat enough of them to put on the pounds, but you probably won’t want to.

Same thing in most people’s cases. If they’d just do the serving size, they’d be on a diet!

My Mini Wheats box says 22 lil biscuits. I put 22 in my regular bowl and looked at the wife and asked her how long would this keep me going while working. She agreed I’d be hungry in two hours. I tried the 22 but my stomach was asking where the rest was. I guess eating 35 a day for 30 plus years trains yer tummy.

There’s a myth that the package is a serving size, no matter how big it is.
