Whoa… I’m surprised to hear that Agnes’ cakes may have contained any eggs, butter, sugar, or flour.
I wonder whether Grandma actually checked.
Yeah, knowing Agnes as she does, she probably did, cos she wouldn’t have assumed.
I mean, I only know her in the comics, and I didn’t even assume.
I wouldn’t want to try anything she baked, knowing that half, if not all, the ingredients were usually found on the sidewalk or in a dumpster…. or maybe in the gutter.
Rarely in Grandma’s kitchen, anyway.
And who knows what she was mixing this time with Grandma’s valuable baking supplies.
As for competition for income…
Grandma has a poorly paid factory job… and a backlog of bills.
She’s sad that she can’t afford to buy Agnes the things she needs, never mind starting on what she wants.
I’m sure she’d welcome ANY income Agnes could bring in to help out…
as long as it was legal, respectable, and didn’t interfere with her schooling.
Now if Agnes ads ham to that bag of lima beans she would have one of the most hated servings of C rations that there was. Also known as ham and mother f*****s.
Her grandma needs to teach Agnes to cook. And eat her mistakes so she doesn’t waste any food. My grandma taught me to make oatmeal and I learned the difference between a tsp of salt and a tbs of salt.

Sounds like Grannie doesn’t want any competition for income in the trailer.

Agnes will try to make something disgusting out of those beans.

She does have her standards.
On the other hand…
she knows Agnes’ skill level in many endeavors…
and can guess what she’d earn as a baker.
I mean, lose.

Why is Agnes’ eye black in the last panel? Did Trout finally slug her?

ALMOST-certain, Trout.

Why doesn’t Red Cross Disaster Relief serve corn and lima beans?

Why is Agnes reading a magazine called “Germs”? That’s a little scary. Just think of what she may do with that kind of knowledge—CDC look out!

Well, Agnes has now done cookies and cake. What’s next, ice cream? ☺

Lima bean cakes might fill the bill.
Every failure shows you what won’t work. Eventually all remaining is what will.

I just love canned lima beans.
