My girlfriend Mary has been taking dogs from Puerto Rico to the states to get adopted. She gets on the plane with the dog. When the plane lands, the people adopting the dog are waiting at the airport. She gives them the dog, turns around and hops back on a plane to Puerto Rico. I asked, " You sure they aren’t putting cocaine in those dogs?" She just did a trip that went all the way to Seattle. Fortunately, she knew some friends out there and was able to spend 2 days recovering before heading back.
I found our first stray kitten in the car trunk and the last on the porch in the middle of an Ottawa Valley winter. The ones in the middle were from a shelter. Their average life span is around 20 years old. The trunk kitten was solid black and about as affectionate as a cat can get. He was also a ruthless hunter, always struck from the shadows.
Our cats and dogs have all been rescues, shelters, foundlings and even from a box labeled “Free Kittens” or from an adoption day at a pet food store. They have all made our lives better. Even the 3 year old tuxedo foundling kneading my leg as he gets ready to take his pre-second breakfast nap on my lap purring like a perfectly balanced V-12 makes this a better day.
My first cat I found back in the 60’s. My Grandfather and I were at a garage dump when I heard meowing coming from a box. Opened it up and there was this white kitten. Took him home and named him “Lucky”. He lived a long time.
