My dad showed/taught us (my bothers and me) when we were shingling a roof that if you hold the nail more like a person typically holds a cigarette with pointer finger and middle finger (instead of with your thumb and pointer finger), it wouldn’t hurt nearly as much when you missed the nail you were trying to hit.
Hmm, imponderables. I was just wondering likewise the other day why do they call it a spanner in the works, when they show a picture of an open end wrench in the mechanical gear works.

Even though a hammer is my favorite tool, I dearly regret using it and give it nasty nicknames every time I nail my finger.

The essence of systems analysis is picking out the correct wrench to hammer in the proper screw.
