what does a trombone sound like to Alice? as far as I can remember, I never insulted my older brother’s playing thereof

Alice will probably grow up to be a critic.

The truth will set you free, Petey. Learn to accept it.

Once again, a little over 10 years ago, Richard posted a blog entry regarding this strip:

Playing the Oboe for a long time could affect your picky-eater score, Petey! Careful!

I wonder if Petey’s oboe playing sounds like the noise Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) made at the beginning of the movie when he blasts out a few notes on his clarinet and states: “Never had a lesson in my life!”….

Best oboe work is in WB Cartoons; Petey’s playing sounds like someone is torturoing a blue crane!

Actually, I love the sound of an oboe!

The thing about the oboe is there is very little middle ground. You either sound really bad, or really good.

She should get a nose flute (aka Humanatone, Snoot Flute).

Do kids still play instruments? We were required in elementary school

I heard the tune of “Oh Christmas Tree” when I read the words in the first panel.

Petey ought to switch to a cooler instrument, maybe an accordion.

Ahh, the double reeded instruments! They take even more practice than the single reed instruments to sound great. Loved playing bassoon. Very fond memories. My grandmother said I sounded like a dying moose when I first started playing it. Not sure how she’d know what one sounded like as we were from Houston, and she was just biased because she loved the sound of the flute and couldn’t understand why I wanted to move away from flute to this large, honking thing.
