The head of the physics department where I attended undergraduate school used to work in the private sector at the time lasers were just being invented. He told his boss that laser would never amount to anything. Later, he became an expert on them.
1955: My father, a Reserve Naval Aviator, upon buying a house 3 blocks from the end of the airport runway in Des Moines: “They will never have jets at this airport”.
I’m still amazed that the moon landing happened when the room size computer was just then coming on line at NASA. Huge thanks to the women computers!!!
There were sites constantly calling in computer failures. Our workstations had 64 MB of ram instead of 16, 1.2 gb disks instead or 340 MB, and CD burners for backup and file transfer. When people tried to copy audio CDs and the workstation didn’t have a reader and burner, it copied a 900 MB file to the hard drive and bluescreened when it ran out of room. We were constantly locating and deleting that file to get them running again. We finally convinced them to buy a second disk drive.

“It’s just a plot to take away our personal freedoms.”
Well, I guess you don’t have many “personal freedoms” when you’re buried in a cemetery plot.
