    Uh.

I know things were a little different during the time this particular Strip was written, but isn’t the Cashier a little “old” to be dating high school students?

Not to mention the entire thing being inappropriate?

I would believe she was a student cashier, seeing as I works as one in my high school, if it was for the fact she is drawn older. Like twenty somethings play high school students in TV/Movies.

When I was in sixth grade, I was told just before lunch that it was my turn to work the lunch line for the week. But I had to run home to tell my Mom that I wouldn’t be home for lunch.

@Mordy: Back in the 1950s and 1960s, when I was in high school, public schools offered trade school classes for those who were going to work after high school (or were working while in high school). One of the offerings included ‘hospitality’ (restaurant cooking, serving, and hotel management) and the students worked in the cafeteria as part of the training…

If Lunch Lady’s life is so awesome, why is she so sensitive to thoughtless comments made by teens? Especially comments made by the stereotypical, blonde, cheerleader airhead type. She’s either making up her grand successes or despite them, she’s not happy about her weight.

The initial remark WAS thoughtless but it was more, ’I’m in my own world and I’m just “thinking” out loud.’ than ‘Jesus, look at that fat pig. I’m going to make fun of her.’ Her follow-up comments were rude but if Lunch Lady doesn’t get pissy about the initial comment and demand an apology, likely the dieting girl just forgets her and goes on with her idiotic self and leaves her in peace. (I’ll admit my response as a thoughtless teen would have been to pay for the diet soda, then say “You want an apology? Fine, I’m sorry you’re fat.” and flounce off to blather with my friends.)

(As with several commenters, I thought that was a stereotypical “Lunch Lady”, drawn somewhat older, NOT a fellow student.)
