The USPS did issue a collection of 32¢ ‘classic comic strips’ stamps a couple of years after this (in 1995). I bought a bunch, and used ’em for years .. I still have a couple of full sheets.
It’s been done. Here’s a list, although the ones I could find from before 1993 (when this strip was originally published) weren’t cartoon characters, but some other fictional characters.
