Trout is talking about two different things here. In panel 2 she is talking about apathy, panel 3 about giving up. Lack of concern can easily lead to giving up, or not even trying in the first place, but rarely does one easily give up on a matter of great concern.
funny never thought of quitting as an art or a quitter as an artist – new times call for new philosophical expressions I guess. ever watched a chick-a-dee fly into a feeder? never directly, always from two or more different angles/directions. but they always get to the feeder.
