Once upon a time we had a cat named Larry. He was a big ginger tabby that just loved everyone. We had a cat bed that we had gotten for Bagheera previously, but he was never interested in cat beds until years later when we got heated ones, so Larry claimed it. Then one day my dad got a new pair of shoes, and Larry decided to claim the box as his new bed. And it stayed that way. I don’t think he ever used the cat bed again after discovering the box!
Someone wondered why his little paw is up in the air…
A bit of math…
Kinematics of Deformable Bodies
Helmoltz’s Fundemental Theorem of Kinematics in his paper on vortex motions:
The most general motion of a sufficeiently small element of a deformable body can be represented as the sum of
1. a translation2. a rotation3. an extension (contraction) in three mutually orthogonal directions.
The proof is provided by little PUCK here, and is based on the Taylor expansion of the relative displacement of two neighboring points (P) and (O) in terms of their original coordinate differences.
Translation: Puck’s entry into the box belly down, is then translated into the available universe
Rotation: Puck spins on his center axis to fill the available space now residing back down, belly up/to the side.
Extension: his three limbs are then extended in three mutually orthogonal directions to insure maximum uptake. (Puck is uniquely qualified for this, as he has 3 central axis’ of extension)
I leave boxes around for my cats, but for the most part they seem to ignore them. Occasionally they will play in one, I am not sure I have ever seen one sleep in one. Maybe I am not putting out impossibly small enough ones.
OT: Hi all! Sorry it’s been a while. Just wanted to check in! Yen is doing great! She has gotten very talkative and also very demanding. Let’s just say I don’t need an alarm clock in the morning anymore. She follows me around the apartment looking at me expectantly for pets every time. When I reach down to her she jumps into my hand because I’m not touching her fast enough! Thank you all for going through her journey with us. She is a very special baby.
On my birthday last month, one of my friends gave me my presents from her in one of those soft sided crates. I didn’t really have any use for it after I took all the presents out, so I set it on the floor. My cats love it. They can barely fit inside.
I have a photo of Jasper in the shipping box for a shoe box, so it was just slightly larger. It was still incredibly tiny for him. He is on his back with one leg up in the air like Puck’s and his tail is wrapped around his face. Unfortunately, when I tried to use it as an avatar, it lost all detail. I miss that sweet boy!
One of my favorite memories is one of my cats squeezing themselves into my niece’s toddler shoe box. It was a muffin with a whole lotta top. He repeatedly used it until one day it just gave way and broke — he let out a big meow as if hurt. Of course, he still tried to lay on the broken box.

Is there paper in that box to rustle about in, Puck? I’m assured by my boys that rustly paper is essential to a good box.

I remember once seeing a picture of a cat sitting up with a front foot in a tiny box like you would use for selling a pair of earrings.

That appendage sticking up over Puck’s right ear, could that be a left front leg? Awkward, but that appears to be the only appendage unaccounted for.

For a moment I thought this would involve a hairball in the new shoes, then I remembered this was “BCN,” not “Ten Cats” or “Garfield.”

I would have thought the box contained child’s shoes if it’s too small for Puck. None of the boys are chonky.♥

From Nancy Sinatra: These Boots Were Made for Walkin’
The news is saying the Man just bought some sneakers
A pair of shoes that really rock,
But we cats get the best of this great deal,
’Cause with the shoes come a great cardboard box!
…….
This box was made for nappin’
And that’s just what we’ll do,
Impossibly tiny box that barely fits
Me and my crew!
…….
When I get in there’s barely room to curl up
Of course my toes and tail are hanging out
I know I’ll never fit myself all the way in,
It is a perfect fit without a doubt!
…….
This box was made for nappin’
And that’s just what we’ll do,
Impossibly tiny box that barely fits
Me and my crew!
…….
Some folks think you need lots of room for nappin’
They think they need to stretch out to sleep, Hah!
I’ll just curl up in this lovely box of cardboard,
And not get out until I’ve had my ZZZ’s
…….
This box was made for nappin’
And that’s just what we’ll do,
Impossibly tiny box that barely fits
Me and my crew!

Cats don’t climb into spaces…they pour themselves in, then assume the size and shape of the space.
L(v1) = L(v2) <→ L(v1 – v2) = 0

Because we’ve all looked at our cats in contorted poses that made us think “there’s no way that cat can be comfortable” and yet, they are.

When measuring cat boxes, two sizes too small is perfect. We’re talking about cardboard boxes, which “give”, not metal or wooden boxes.

Not so sure about the brand. Sounds like one that you have to buy new shoes every month, if not every other week.
