You just can’t beat a mob of cats on your lap (or in this case, gathering around you in a group hug). Most of the time when I’m home and in my chair watching TV, I have at least 2 or 3 cats in my lap. Last night, I briefly topped out at 6 cats all over me with one more cat trying to find a spot to join them. That was too much for some of the other cats who were starting to feel crowded, so 3 of them left. It sure is hard to get things done around the house when you’re buried under a pile of cats!
Alpha Cat. As you know, Alpha is strictly his own person; does as he sees fit, bows to non.. We have weasels. Yes, weasels. Youngish weasels with their pure white coats and black tipped tails for the winter. A small group of them, all presumably from the same litter, have moved under the covered and glassed in porch of our new (but old) home. Pat spotted two of them building a nest under the dryer out there.. Now, we have birds. Weasels kill and eat birds. This is not a Good Thing if you want to keep the birds.. So, we apprise Alpha of the situation. He’s out there chasing the weasels around the porch. They elude him. Two days later he’s out there again racing around. Pat watches. And watches.. And realizes that Alpha is playing with the weasel. And the weasel is responding in kind. Alpha swings the weasel around by his tail, they chase each other and roll around. Alpha even shares his strip of liver (that we put on the porch for him) with the weasel – there they are, heads inches apart, chewing on the same strip of liver.. Obviously Alpha is practicing his dictum of “civis romanus sum” again, as he did with the baby skunks. He’s working on civilizing them according to his own lights. . It’s a real jaw-dropper. We’re not quite sure how to handle this, the cat who rules with an Iron Paw – and who subjugates everything he comes up against – consorting with weasels?. We know he’ll do as only he sees fit, we’ll just have to sit and see where this leads.
WE HAVE SNOW!!! A big deal here in the Owens Valley high desert, especially in this extreme drought year. Less than half an inch was forecast but there is at least 4 inches and it’s still coming down with no signs of it letting up! So beautiful, and the first time I have been really happy in over a year.
I’ve been hoping that we’d see something like this eventually. The cats are so mean to Annie most of the time (except Oliver), when I’m sure they’re missing out on hugs and pets. That’s what humans are for, after all.
Awwww, how sweet. :) It’s good to see the kitties being nice to Annie. On another note, saw two wrens, two juncos, three golden crowned kinglets, and a squirrel while out walking today.
I bought myself a new (more powerful) microwave just before Christmas. My daughter got it open and up on the shelf in the pantry for me tonight. She took the very large box home to her cats (my adorable grand cats), and they said it was the best gift ever!

A big warm dog will also do the job! My dog is more inclined to snuggle than my cats.

It’s lovely to see Annie appreciated rather than the butt of Chesney’s jokes.

Had seven tom turkeys in my yard today, just pecking at what grass is left.
