Marketing can be tricky. There was a laundry detergent brand that once had an advertising campaign in Saudi Arabia. They had the typical before/after pictures we’ve all seen in such ads, with an overwhelmed woman on the left with a pile of dirty laundry, and the same woman smiling on the right standing by a neat stack of clean, white folded laundry. They seem to have forgotten that Arabic is read from right to left, so the campaign didn’t work quite as well as expected.

You won’t sell many that way, Larry!

In the 60’s, or maybe before, there was a vitamin and mineral fortified caramel candy sold in drug stores…

meant to be eaten before or in-between meals, as an appetite suppressant.

It was marketed as a weight loss aid…

Therefore called “AYDS.”

 

By sometime in the early 1980’s the name started to be seen as pretty ghoulish,

especially in San Francisco, as we began to see AIDS patients wasting away.

Eventually they tried to modify the product name to something like “Diet Ayds,” but that didn’t work.

 

I’d forgotten about them, but something reminded me just a few days ago…

and I posted about them on another strip.

A kind of creepy recollection.

Gee, he didn’t even offer Zebra a shot at the starring role.

Reminds me of a car named “Nova” which in Spanish means : Not Going ……. Croc Power !

I understand the 19th title is particularly deadly.

Add the word “Testing” and they’ll line up for miles.

And then there was a software vendor attempting to market an Automatic Incremental Documentation System.

Reminds me of the diet candy in the 70’s/80’s and the commercials for it. “Take a break and have an Aids candy”. Marketing went south later in the 80’s for some reason.
