What do they mean that the human thumb has its own pulse? Is there a separate heart beating within the thumb? I think it is the same pulse that can be measured in the other digits on the hand. I have a finger pulse oximeter that I put on my index finger that not only gives me my blood oxygen percentage but also gives me my pulse rate.
Skin contact with pure nicotine is poisonous to humans as well. From Wikipedia: People who harvest or cultivate tobacco may experience Green Tobacco Sickness (GTS), a type of nicotine poisoning caused by dermal exposure to wet tobacco leaves.
Of course nicotine is poisonous to insects. It’s presence in plants gives them a huge evolutionary advantage in terms of deterring and controlling pests.
Each pressure point where a pulse may be felt has pulse that beats at a different time because it is a slightly different distance from the heart but they should all be the same rate. The fingers also have a pulse but it is barely detectable, unlike the thumb which is more pronounced, but not as much as the wrist or carotid. Some CPR courses teach this, believe it or not.
There’s a great story about how the ice cream cone was “invented” at the World’s Fair. Seems the Waffle concession wasn’t doing too good, so the guy teamed up with the ice cream concession next to him and made a container for a scoop of ice cream, so that the people could walk around the fair eating the ice cream without bowls or spoons. The other people saw them and flocked to the ice cream stand for theirs.
Why are humans, who are suppose to be the “smartest” of all the species – insist on ingesting our healthy bodies with nicotine and other drugs? Duh, duh, and duh.
RBION got it right when saying “The ice cream cone was popularized at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.” There is a popular story that it was invented there and then. But, they existed before 1904.
The story goes that an ice cream vendor at the fair ran out of paper cups. So, he bought thin waffles from a nearby waffle vendor to use in place of cups.
The Nightshade Family of plants is noted for producing toxins. Tobacco, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers, goji berries, and several other plants are in the Nightshade Family.
Yes, nicotine is poisonous to insects, which is why those plants developed that defense mechanism. What is distressing is that mega-pharm-ag has developed neonicotinoids as bug spray for crops — very effective until it is so widespread it kills off the honey bees. Oops, did we need them for something? Ya think?
According to Wikipedia the manduca sexta moth larva is immune to the effects of nicotine. It apparently can actually make use of the nicotine to defend itself against predators.

Poisoning insects is the only reason nicotine evolved. It’s not like tobacco benefited from giving humans a buzz.

Dave also makes a pretty good ice cream. But that’s in Hawaii, not St Louis.

I dunno about that. I never saw any insect die because of my smoking.

Does that snake have twice as much venom? I’d probably be pretty venomous if I were that thing.

Nicotine is poisonous to humans, too. Just takes longer when inhaled in small quantities.

Smoking stunts their growth.
It melted then, too.Double Dave then double bit Dave – Dave in revenge for a really lame name.
A rapid pulse rate was found in both Dave and Dave’s thumbs after being bitten by Double Dave.
