As a resident of Arizona, I can tell you roadrunners are crazy-looking critters. We have a couple that hang around our house and we’ve watched their antics for years.
Still waiting for Melvin to reappear. Of course, since they (and almost all cartoonists) do these comments far in advance, I guess my cries for him will go unheeded. Of course, if he DOES appear, can I again say he stole it from me? :)
Because of the “Road Runner”, no one seems to have noticed the guy in the middle (don’t remember his name). He has 5 fingers and a thumb on his left hand. The right hand has only 3 fingers and a thumb.
Around 2000, I was getting on the Freeway, with my son as passenger. A bird ran across the on ramp. It took me a few seconds to realize that it was a roadrunner, which of course, made the incident pretty funny. I had not seen one in Southern California before. But since then we’ve seen one in our yard several times. Once, the bird was crossing the driveway, with a lizard tail dangling from its mouth. When you see them up close, you realize how big they are.My wife saw one in the back yard leap up and grab a house finch from the bird feeder.
My last sighting was when I heard a strange (yet familiar) vocalization by a bird on our roof. I realized that it was a roadrunner! Or a roofrunner in this case. When I kept staring at it, it leaped/flew from the roof to my neighbor’s tree (several feet away). And yes, it really was a roadrunner. And no, the vocalization was not Meep! Meep!

I’d be a little more worried if I saw a coyote and an Acme Van!

There’s something different about that guy, but I just can’t put my finger on it….
And Rita will love paying her in birdseed…
