My mother liked to tell the story of her cousin who wasn’t quite … right. Among other issues, he had no sense of smell. Her aunt may have been a cupcake or two short of a full party too, because she would take him with her and introduce him to the adults by saying “This is my son Harry. He doesn’t smell, you know.”
Earl knows the difference between good and well. It’s millenials and younger who don’t the difference between adverbs and adjectives. But if you need a joke, you do what’s necessary.
I have almost no sense of smell. My wife envies me when I walk our son’s dog and pick up its poop without smelling it, or when a skunk goes by our open window at night, but she’s the one who gets to smell all the great cooking smells, flowers, etc.
You would think that Earl would be aware of leaving himself open like that after what happened to him on Saturday…https://www.gocomics.com/pickles/2021/02/06?ct=v&cti=2208697
My wife has an odd sense of smell, unless I mention something, she doesn’t smell it. The weird part: her sense of taste seems normal, even though much of that sense is actually smells.
Earl may have different smell sense, and Opal is right on his words.I had trouble with sense of smell for a lot of years, skunk no trouble with that. My sister thought my nose need worked on, I thought no I did not, Mean time on a lot of antibiotics reason constant irritation. Dr. finally sent me to ENT, showed no infection, just needed septum repaired, a month later I told Dr. I had sense come back of smell. Then I had to go back to Dr. he was puzzled, I still had irritation, tried antibiotic again, that time did help.
The verb “smell” can mean “detect an odor” or “give off a detectable odor.” There’s a story that Samuel Johnson wanted to fix that. On a hot day, a woman said to Johnson “You smell!” He replied “That is not correct, madam. You smell; I stink.”
Someone sent that anecdote to Dear Abby. She imagined one of Shakespeare’s lines changed to “A rose by any other name would stink as sweet.”
Anosmia is one of the more common symptoms of COVID-19 infection. Halitosis is usually caused by gum disease or rotting teeth. Zucchini muffins smell great right up to the point where they burn.

Ref: what are you doing?
Louie the Looper (Lou Costello): I’m smellin’.
Ref: It’s poor English, but you sure do!
From “Abbott and Costello meet the Invisible Man” (1951).

Maybe Earl’s nose is just highly attuned to the scent of evil … “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? Only Earl’s nose knows!”
