I never really understood this saying. Is it because cherries vary in taste or quality? Is it because cherries are supposed to be happy or sad? Is it because a bowl of cherries has a shelf life and will eventually become inedible (die)? Is it because they are delicious and juicy on the outside but contain a pit to avoid inside? (The last two make the most sense).
