what have you been doing all week, Calvin, to put off the book report? was it your secondary duplicator which made a physical manifestation of your good side?
Okay, I’m assuming this story arc has come to an end; so, if I may, here’s a lonely 6 year old kid who has a stuffed tiger that he has morphed into his best friend. Now he’s produced a behaved, benevolent alter ego that’s also blessed with a romantic soul. He has now created a scenario where the friendly, likable doppelgänger is destroying original Calvin’s well earned anti-social reputation and this needs to stop. So, (1.) was this a dream, (2.) a daydream or (3.) a live action acting out of that daydream with Calvin playing both roles (cause let’s face it, you just can’t create alter egos by simply walking through a cardboard box).
“A good goal, according to child literacy expert Timothy Shanahan, is that children should master 20 sight words by the end of Kindergarten and 100 sight words by the end of First Grade.”
Okay, I’m thinking that is a pretty good idea. I know it may seem a little lazy, but if Audible had been a thing when I was in Grade/High school, I would have happily read/listened to pretty much every book I was assigned.
One Sunday night, I asked my parents if they could help me with a book project. My dad asked, “When is it due?” I answered, “Tomorrow.” He asked, “When did you KNOW about it?” I told him that it was a couple of weeks ago. He sat back & said, “You got yourself into this; you’ll get yourself out of it.” I squeaked a B, and never procrastinated again.
I can just imagine myself at Calvin’s age, already reading hundreds of words per minute, “studying” by asking someone to read a book to me. It was torture just listening to other kids read aloud.
I hated book reports, however since I have been in Engineering I have to do reports all the time. I don’t mind too much, unless it’s about a test failure.

That was pretty clever and sneaky of Calvin! Too bad he didn’t think it through! But really, a book with over 100 pages assigned to a first grader?
