in another C&H strip (a Sunday one), Calvin argues with the elements, but decides to strip to his birthday suit thinking it will be no problem… until he runs back to the house because of hail
My sibs and I used to go out to the back yard in the summer thunderstorms in New Mexico and huddle under tarps. Then run around like nuts. Then huddle under tarps… Then take a hot bath to stop the shivers.
“It was a hard rain, a perpetual rain, a sweating and steaming rain; it was a mizzle, a downpour, a fountain, a whipping in the eyes, an undertow at the ankles; it was a rain to drown all rains and the memory of rains.” -Ray Bradbury – “The Long Rain”
Reminds me of a time at Old Faithful . It started raining and I was holding an umbrella for me and a friend. It started lightning and I told him it was his turn to hold umbrella.
One of the biggest hazards in lightning storms is being under a tree for shelter. Trees are champions at attracting lightning, but they have enough internal resistance that lightning is always looking for an alternative on the way down. (From my front window I can see a large pine tree with the tell-tale vertical scar wandering down the side facing me.)
I know that Watterson was a big Charles Schulz admirer, and this strip seems like one of Watterson’s most Peanuts-esque ones. Imagine Calvin as Lucy, and Hobbes as Charlie Brown.
Love this one! I picture that big “KABOOM!” in the third panel being this classic “Castle Thunder” sound effect variation that Disney and Hanna-Barbera often used… https://soundeffects.fandom.com/wiki/Sound_Ideas,THUNDER_-THUNDER_CLAP_AND_RUMBLE,_WEATHER01(H-B)
Dragline: Come out of the storm, Luke! What’s the matter with you? Ain’t you scared of gettin’ killed?
Luke: Aw, he can take this ol’ life anytime he wants to. (To sky:) You hear that, old man? Show me you’re up there! Love me, hate me, kill me, just let me know! (No response.) Yeah, that’s what I thought. I’m just standin’ in the rain, talkin’ to myself…

Calvin assumes that the weather cares what he thinks. Bad assumption.

Hobbes has it right. As my father always said, “Better to be a live chicken than a dead duck!”

The worst case is it rains for 40 days and 39 nights. You can outlast nature if you’re patient.
