Personally i wish they would do away with plastic bags. They were talking about doing it here but Wal-Mart threw a hissy fit.

We’ll be losing plastic bags in this province next year. Disappointing. I never threw away my grocery bags; it became a quick grab grocery bag again, or, once dirty or damaged, a garbage bag.

The Reality Check is, why complain about plastic bags when every item in the store is wrapped in plastic.

“19 layers of hermetically sealed plastic”- some comedian said they ought to make prisons out of that stuff.

I know this sounds callous and selfish but, aside from the pollution aspects of plastics,

I sometimes think of the party scene where Dustin Hoffman, as the 21 year old Ben in 1967 film ‘The Graduate’, is told by one of his

    father’s guests:

_Mr. McGuire: I just want to say one word to you. Just one word.

    Benjamin: Yes, sir.

    Mr. McGuire: Are you listening?

    Benjamin: Yes, I am.

    Mr. McGuire: Plastics.

Benjamin: Exactly how do you mean?

Mr. McGuire: There’s a great future in plastics. Think about it. Will you think about it?_

Darn good advice. It would have behooved the younger Ben or younger any of us to invest in plastics 50 years ago

Micro-plastic balls, a greater threat to the environment than climate change. There’s no getting rid of the stuff and it’s EVERYWHERE!

Yup.. society will be using oil for decades.. we are not about to give up on plastic anytime soon. Sure, a token here and there, eliminating plastic bags at the grocery store.. which likely is sponsored by the plastic garbage bag industry.. is not going to do much.

As I’ve been saying since the 60’s, the problem with plastic is that it works so well. But obviously we have way overdone the use of plastic.

The problem is not nearly so much with plastic as with our throw-away unregulated society. All plastics are not created equal-some are more recyclable than others. In fact, one type of plastic, PLA, made from corn, is biodegradable.

I’m so old I remember when plastic bags first came out! The cashier would ask if you wanted paper or plastic bags. At least the paper bags we could use as school book covers or recycled.
