I’m not sure why, but the gag of only seeing characters’ eyes in a pitch black room has always been really funny to me. It’s even better when there are cats involved!
Ohhhh nooooo! Not the ambiance! There’ll be no rest now. It’s all up to the cats to create the best pile possible so that plenty of heat can be generated. But what about the kids?!
It is amazing how many electrical dependent items we have. Lighting, Entertainment, Heat, Cooling, Scheduling (Clocks, alarm clocks), Refrigeration and Food Storage, and cooking.
Fortunately we wired up for Solar in ’99 and produce a surplus that banks some power before returning the rest to the grid. My system came before regulation that limits the power you can generate and sell back.
So our dogs and cats don’t get many opportunties to enjoy the silence.
They do have a fireplace, but I don’t recall if it is wood burning or gas log or electric. I expect to see an upcoming strip featuring the whole family on the big red couch in a pile a fuzzy blankets in the glow of the fireplace.
Where is Elvis? Is he going to sleep through the whole event like when Walter Matthau stayed glued to his barstool and bottle in the bar while George Kennedy and Chuck Heston saved numerous lives in LA in the ’70s flick “Earthquake”?
Toe beans! – bouncing ones! Woman calls Man “muffin”! And salt lamp? I had to google that one. Power and water still out here in Texas … thanks for commiserating, BCN.
Georgia posted this on facebook "“I wrote these about 3 weeks ago, the timing feels surreal. I’m hoping at the very least these strips be somewhat of a comfort for our readers in Texas. If not during (I don’t know if folks can view them online of course, and I don’t know if the newspapers are still printing if the power outages are affecting their buildings too right now) then maybe after. The rest of the country is thinking of everyone in Texas and hoping this all passes swiftly!”
I am curious how you draw the last two panels. After you draw the eye’s and speech bubbles, do you then have to go in and color all the remaining area black, or, is that done automatically by whomever is publishing it?
I have collected a bunch of battery backup supplies that were abandoned after their computer project went away. My house sounds like a fleet of forklifts backing up every time the power goes out.
I would mumble something like “the powers out” then roll over and go back to sleep. Nothing I can do about it and at that point I’m not using it. Chances are the power company will have it back on by the time I wake up.
From Georgia’s IG: “Sometimes (often!) when one of us goes out the garage door, Lupin waits for us and meows LOUDLY. I came back in through the front door today and heard him and finally got it on video…” Best frenemy gets into the act too!
Cannot believe the timing of our “power outage” storyline this week—thinking of and praying for everyone in Texas. Such a scary, frustrating situation, hoping dearly some relief comes soon. I hope these strips will at least be a comfort to some, however unintended the timing was. And I hope this passes quickly for folks in Texas!
Georgia posted a video of Lupin meowing at a door she went out, but didn’t come back in. It also features a confrontation between Lupin and Goldie at the end:
“Muffin” ??? There are a lot of things I’d call Georgia’s husband, as shown here and on her blog and website, but unless she left out the “Stud” part, he ain’t no “muffin” in my book. More like a 10+ (the plus being his love of the kitties!).
And J-L, Jora, and I are back home. We have power and water that has to be boiled. We have heat from our electric heaters as long as we don’t try to turn them up too much. We have one Database that has forgiven us for abandoning her because Jora gave her some bites of chicken. We have one Reboot that is still mad because there is snow outside. He’ll be happy as soon as I go to bed and he can be the littlest spoon. We have plenty of warm fuzzy blankets to hide under. There is food still frozen in the freezer and most of the stuff in the fridge is still good as well. (The salad didn’t make it. sigh) Life is good.

There’s a man in Georgia’s cartoon
Calls himself the human trampoline
And sometimes when I’m tripping over felines in the dark,
I say “Whoa, so this is what he means!”
He means we’re being used as springboards
And I see losing power is like a window to the void
Well, everybody sees nothing whatsoever…

Meanwhile, Back on the Nile
Elvis-Anum: Bea, did you just hear a thwump?
Beatrixia: I think it was our favorite Midnight Yodeler, Lupinium.
Elvis-Anum: That was a warning thwump. Something must be wrong!
Beatrixia: After you’ve poofed, let’s go find Lupinum and ask him what’s wrong.
Sometime Later
Elvis-Anum: Lupinium, we heard your yodels and your thwump. What’s going on?
Lupinium: The salt lamps have all gone out on the road to Afar!
Beatrixia: Oh, no it rained last night. The salt lamps have all dissolved! Maybe Burt-Ra can help.
Burt-Ra: I can make new lamps, but I’ll need lots of salt.
Elvis-Anum: I know just the cat who can do it.
Thomios: Of course I can help. The pantry always has just what we need!
