The sensible way to mount an expedition to Mars would be to send colonists (like the Mayflower), not explorers (like Lewis & Clark). Explorers would have to take enuf extra fuel with them to get back. Unlike the Pilgrims, however, we’d have the capability to send robotic vessels ahead of our colonists equipped with everything they’d need for their Thanksgiving dinner upon arrival.

Not body shaming or anything, but I doubt his heart would survive the G’s he would pull during launch. I look like him and I know mine would not.

Don’t forget, upon arrival on Mars, you will need a mask (helmet) every time you go out.

You’d also want to have a tonsillectomy and appendectomy before you go if you haven’t had them already.

The ride would be as great as the destination. And if I died on the way, the rest of the crew would have compost for a garden.

Maybe the Moon as a staging base for going further into the Solar system and as an in-between for the Trojan points.
But Mars, Venus – pffhht!
We need to get to the asteroid belt and partake of the riches there!
Go to a nickel iron asteroid. Attach smelting facilities and rocket motors to it, and guide it back to Earth. On the way, refine the ore into ingots.
By the time you reach Earth, the asteroid is gone, and you have a space carrier for all the ingots, powered by the rocket motors.
You get the ingots back to Earth by splashing them in the ocean. These would be controlled splashes, like a shuttle landing.
Or, use the ingots to build O’Neil colonies at the Trojan points!
