Somehow I don’t see the progression from useless arms into essential appendages. Seems the tiny arms became so because they were useless anyway. Can’t even speculate on the tail becoming a navigation device.
It’s not really going that well. As recently as the last century, the skies would darken with millions of birds in migration. Rachel Carson wrote of “The Silent Spring” when pesticides had cause huge diebacks. While those threats are under control, environmental encroachment, air polllution and tall buildings have caused huge decreases in population. How many trees were cut down recently in your neighborhood? How many were planted?
