My grandparents had a remote control that was the size of 8 cigarette packs stacked in two layers of 4. It had a miniature control panel and a small speaker. It was an old pre 1965 Packard Bell, and the remote was connected to the tv with/by a 1/2 inch diameter cable. One of my cousins has it under a blanket in her garage. I am trying to get her to take it to Antiques Roadshow or donate it to the Smithsonian.
My uncle had an early remote that used sound to change the channel up or down. My dad would mess with him by jingling the change in his pocket and changing the channel.

We only had four channels to choose from, so it wasn’t that much trouble.

Heck it was easy with 4 channels, everybody knew the schedules for that day or night on what was coming on!!!
