If this is truly so important to you, then just sit outside all day and watch the bird feeder. As long as you remain relatively motionless, the birds will still come. But when you see a squirrel, just stand up and let him know you’re there — he’ll sit in a tree or on the fence post and yell at you for a while, but eventually he’ll leave and the birds will come back.
(Back in my day, this was called “summer vacation”.)
I always felt bad about people wanting to feed the birds but somehow the squirrels were the villains for wanting access to the goodies too. You put out food, you attract things that eat the food. At least its only squirrels – I have seen deer up end the feeders, and I have seen BEARS up end the feeders. They are significantly harder to thwart.
