When I was in the military, in officer training, we were required to attend a Protestant, Catholic or Jewish service at the chapel on Sunday. We could then go into town to worship at the church of our choice. Fortunately, that requirement was later ruled unconstitutional – a fine example of Holy Lawyering.

When I was 10 I gave up church for lent. It felt so good that I made it permanent. Never looked back.
