My mother developed a fear of deep water when, as children, her younger sister pranked her by pretending to drown. The result of that was that she made sure we all learned how to swim and took us swimming frequently. Side note: one time my parents took my daughters to the beach. Since we live in the city, my mother didn’t know that our girls learned how to swim during their summer camp, and my girls didn’t know my mother’s fear, so she nearly had a heart attack when, instead of slowly wading in, they ran in & dove in head-first.
Best place to start teaching your little ones to swim, especially correct breathing techniques and the “flutter kicks”. If you don’t mind putting a lot of water in the tub they can master getting their faces looking under the water. Of course, do this BEFORE and soap is put in the tub!
Come on, Jon, stop being such a wuss and man up! But anyway, with the talk of deep water, I was actually afraid of going out to the deep end of a public pool after an incident where I followed my brother to the deep end and I ended up nearly drowning. Now that I’m older, I’m no longer afraid of the deep end.

I float like a brick, so I sympathize with Jon. My ‘deep sea’ diving is limited to an inground pool.
