Scott, what happened to fiscal responsibility, personal responsibility, not LYING. You remember those things, right?
And by “low taxes”, you mean low income taxes, right? Remember that the first thing St. Ronald Reagan did when he became governor of California was to raise the sales tax by 25%.
.
You’re right about how Republicans are now totally the Party Of Trump, but it’s been heading in that direction since Nixon.
Well Carmen, if you can call yourself a conservative but not a conservative, then you have moved through the looking glass and are facing the Red Queen who is standing between Tweedledum and Tweedledee!
We all believe in “freedom” – which is easy because the word is completely vague. Freedom to do WHAT, exactly? A red light at the intersection restricts your freedom. What is the Government preventing you from doing that you want to do?
There’s no confusion Stantisforsmoke, it’s this simple; repeat after me, Carmen stands for conservatism; most of the GOP is right-wing populist…………..You can do it, actually identify facts.
The Republican party of small government, lower taxes, and freedom is gone…and it’s not coming back. At least not anytime soon. It took me a while to accept that. Starting with the rise of the Tea Party until the 2016 election I struggled with the Republican party abandoning it’s ethics and principles and my becoming an outcast among conservatives after voting Republican my entire adult life. Now the Republican party is something that needs to be opposed as it is becoming an existential threat to the Constitution and the long term continuance of the United States.
When Lincoln won the presidency he used federal moneys to improve the lives of the laborers and farmers. Democrats were opposed to such “socialism” and “wage re-distribution” seeking to keep the rich rich. Lincoln also used taxes to pay for all of this. We generally focus on Lincoln winning the civil war, but we overlook that he also believed that you should tax the rich and improve the lives of the poor.
I agree with Stantis. But whereas the Republican Party has temporarily fallen sway to Donald Trump’s populism, the Democratic Party has become an increasingly frangible accretion of identity subgroups. It’s a race to see which splinters first, but the Democrats will shatter worse.
I have never been any party save undeclared. The Tea Party changed the GOP. The DNC left Trump, not the other way around. Principles, for both parties have adjusted. But, GOP principles still rely on individuals to take personal responsibility and DNC still embrace government as the first choice fixer-upper. The blended reality is America.
You still believe in 1924. The GOP has become a personality cult. The only thing worse than a personality cult is a TV personality cult. Trump’s personality finally became toxic enough that people had to vote, even people who hate to vote. He encouraged a mob to invade the Capitol, promised to “be with them” and went home to hide, dithering on calling out protection for Congress. Even personality cult Senators will think twice when their own lives are in danger.
Republicans objected when Kennedy wanted to cut the top tax rate from 91% to 65%. If MAGA means going back to the 1950’s maybe that should include 1950’s tax rates.

If Republicans truly believe in small government, low taxes, and freedom why are they always sticking their laws in my personal business?

Trump was never a conservative. He is a national populist who put America first, unlike the last few Presidents.

Freedom — but only for straight white Christians. Freedom for all others is conditional.
