The last movie I saw in a theater was “The Invisible Man”. The R rating for graphic violence was very well deserved. When no one sees you coming, you can do some really nasty stuff.
Genres can be pretty broad, and horror is possibly the broadest, speaking as it does to primal human instincts. Some is graphic indeed, and some (dare I say the scariest) is not graphic at all.
“The Birds” was a really scary movie, not for what you saw but for what you didn’t see. Hitchcock like to play games with you mind and have you imagine what happened next…but not show you.
I don’t like watching movies with gore, but I have been in a room with student film makers as they continually paused a scene to breakdown the effects used. I can understand the desire to make such movies now. Also, there are rating rules that determine what can be seen on the screen so there are many creative decisions to make viewers see in their imaginations what can’t actually be shown.
It seems kids don’t get as scared. Perhaps because they don’t imagine themselves in the scene. Once they put themselves in the shoes of the victim it all changes.

Sad part is, they’re watching “Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks”.

I can avoid such movies, (Nature films included) but I’m still put out being ambushed by a most violent ad for the program.

Has SF always involved spaceships?

I don’t get the attraction of horror movies, but there are many ‘entertainments’ I don’t understand.

The original Halloween wasn’t thought to be very scary until they added the music.

The film that made me watch Bambi after it just to be able to leave my sofa, at 1 am, was Blair Witch.

Maybe, but certainly non-horror movies didn’t used to be as graphic and disgusting as they are now.

Even “Some Like it Hot” had violent gory scenes, but the last like cracks me up, after multiple viewings.
