You’re too used to Dick Van bleeep cockney, or James Doohan Scottish, or Jane Leeves’ “Manchester”… I tell you, if Jane Leeves had done Daphne Moon with a real Manchester accent, you’d have been buggered to understand her! Niles Crane would have needed an interpreter and the fasitidious Fraiser would have shuddered. Living in Manchester as I do, I can tell you Daphne’s weird, faltering, all-over-the-place “Manchester” accent peppered with unlikely Americanisms was pure comedy gold… not that the producers of “Frasier” meant it to be so bad as to be comedy in itself, of course. It’s just that when it screened in Manchester we thought it were a right laugh… and when they introduced her parents and brothers - one Scottish and one a Cockney - well, how bleeep could it get!
