An Anglophile would enjoy them; an Anglophobe would not. I am proudly the former.

Subtitles it is; but only if fake British accents go far away on this side of the pond.

Dick van Bleep? THe U-cert comic actor who played the windowcleaner in “Mary Poppins” and was wholly blamless in terms of smut or filth save the real stuff acquired as a chimneysweep? Dick van Bleep? Dick van Bleep? Who designed this profanity filter? We’re not talking about a lesbian in a transit here, but one of America’s best jobbing actors who was utterly, completely, incapable of doing a London accent worth a spit and whose name, in Britain, stands as shorthand for every ropey and unconvincing attempt by an American actor or actress to do a British regional accent… Dick van Embankment on a River or Canal, Dick van Diyke…

You’re too used to Dick Van bleeep cockney, or James Doohan Scottish, or Jane Leeves’ “Manchester”… I tell you, if Jane Leeves had done Daphne Moon with a real Manchester accent, you’d have been buggered to understand her! Niles Crane would have needed an interpreter and the fasitidious Fraiser would have shuddered. Living in Manchester as I do, I can tell you Daphne’s weird, faltering, all-over-the-place “Manchester” accent peppered with unlikely Americanisms was pure comedy gold… not that the producers of “Frasier” meant it to be so bad as to be comedy in itself, of course. It’s just that when it screened in Manchester we thought it were a right laugh… and when they introduced her parents and brothers - one Scottish and one a Cockney - well, how bleeep could it get! By then they’d given up all pretence of her family coming from Manchester, England, and it showed…
