It’s a fine line between insurance and extortion. Calvin should have learned that already from Moe. But this is an early strip. Perhaps Moe hadn’t been born yet.

When does insurance become “protection”?

To ask why anyone would buy insurance from Calvin was really asking for trouble.

Reminds of Liberty Auto Insurance’s endless TV ads with the large yellow chicken that make one’s mind explode and change channels only to confront the USAA Ads for refi loans.

That’s not insurance, that’s extortion.

I have been reading the replies to my comments of yesterday. Someone had asked me on Wednesday to clarify whether or not I believe Hobbes to be magical or imaginary. I explained that I used to think he was imaginary – that seemed a natural first assumption – but later started to reason against that and accepted Bill Watterson’s own view that Hobbes is too realistic for Calvin’s imagination – or any kid’s imagination.

I then explained my personal theories. After rejecting my original idea, I continue to consider that Calvin may have helped to create Hobbes out of his imagination. Hobbes may be the result of a combination of Calvin’s imagination, a stuffed doll and a psychic force. The commentator then said that this means I consider Hobbes to be magical. I disagree. I do not see psychic forces as magical but as unknown science.

Bill Watterson explains in “The Calvin And Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book” that he does not see Hobbes as either magical or imaginary.

Calvin has just ensured that Suzie will never be his customer. Now she has a pre-existing condition.

I am sure that there are people who think this is how insurance works.

Reminds me of an exchange on an episode of Law & Order:

Suspect: “We picked up the club’s garbage, provided some working capital, and kept the property safe.”

Detective: “Racketeering, loan-sharking, and extortion.”

Calvin, that’s not insurance, more like an extortion/protection racket, buying protection from you causing harm.
