that was me at the bank today when the manager told me i had to fill out a form that would be sent to the u.s. government if i wanted to complete change of address procedures for a bank account in the hinterlands of japan. it wasn’t his fault, of course, that congress in its vast wisdom made life much more difficult for millions of americans abroad when it came up with the foreign account tax compliance act (fatca), but i didn’t have any witless congressperson to yell at about being set back 50 years in terms of being a foreigner dealing with a bank in japan. thanks, to repeat, to the idiots in u.s. government…

Fortunately, there is a great deal of grace and mercy. We don’t get what we truly deserve.
