No, but before my son had his license, I drove him to school. Well, almost to school. He wanted to walk the last few blocks rather than be seen with MOM.
I am not sure what guys would think if they saw Michael out with his sister aside from “Look, Michael has to drive his sister some place.” Is Michael afraid someone may think he was dating his sister or dating someone who looked like his sister? That would be weird.
Showing off driving recklessly with a new driver’s license is required. But I wonder how fast Michael has to speed to get the car to become airborne .. à la Dukes of Hazzard?
So, back when this was originally written, which 1992, it was still almost 2 years till Ontario Canada passed “Graduated Licencing Laws”. IF it had been done after April 1, 1994, he would have had to have an fully licenced driver, over 18, with several years experience in the passenger seat.
In my state at age 16 (and under) you can only accompany a lone driver age 18 to 80. We have a difficult time maintaining our birth survival rate at 2.
I don’t remember being ashamed of chauffering my kid brother around when I first got my driver’s license. Of course, I was away at prep school in another state, at the time, so other than school vacations, I wasn’t home and when I was, I usually was working.
I do remember taking him for a ride a few times on my motorcycle – much to his delight and my mother’s trepidation!
When I was 16, my Brother was 11 1/2, Sister 6. Don’t remember having to drive them around. Voluntarily did stuff with little Sister. She however, when were at the dime store, accidentally called me Mommy. When I hastily corrected her she thought it was funny and kept doing it. I could only imagine the rumors, if any classmates had been around.

Ouch. She’s proud to be in the car with him but he isn’t. He is driving to look cool.

Any of you FBorFW readers have recollection of driving a sibling around and didn’t want to be seen by their friends instead of yours?

Fun fact: Nancy Drew used to be 16 in the books, but then they aged her up to 18 so that she’d be able to have a national driver’s licence.

Typical, two opposing ‘trains of thought’ from brother and sister ! ! !!

My dad was the worst driver on earth. As soon as I got my license, I did all the driving. I may have extended his life by several years.

No, Elizabeth, don’t do it! Michael, you should be ashamed of yourself! This is your lifelong friend!
rebelstrike0 over 3 years ago
If Elizabeth had been the one to tell Michael to duck down because she did not want to be seen with Michael, then it would have looked like this…
People see Elizabeth in the passenger seat and no one else
Candace: “There is Elizabeth, but she is by herself. How come?”
Dawn: “Looks like Elizabeth has one of those new driverless cars.”
Michael crashes
Candace: “One of those Canadian driverless cars!”

Does Canada actually allow newly licensed drivers under 18 to drive without a licensed adult?

Yes; when my oldest brother took me somewhere, I had to sit in the back seat.

What’s with all of these comic strip anti-gravity cars?

When Michael first took his drivers’ test, he states he was born in 2005. The graduated license law has been in effect since 1994.
Translation: Expect another strip with Elly biting her nails as she sees an RCMP officer approaching her doorstep.

I liked driving my younger brother around! It gave proof that I outranked him (in my own mind, at least).
