That’s called a red herring in the mystery writers business. In the comics world it is called filler because the artist can’t think of anything funny to draw. By the way, I get a sneaky suspicion that when this thing continues tomorrow those two girls aren’t going to be arriving at school at all!

I am not quite sure I am getting this today, but I think I may be:
It appears that OJ is suggesting that Agnes’ book, pillow, bed and lavender walls are the important things that OJ is not coming back to in this set of panels…. correct?
Hmm….. unless I am missing something…. that has to be it. But, to my manner of thinking, I believe OJ would have made this joke more actualized if she had put something really odd, unexpected, or out-of-character in the first two panels…. I don’t know… perhaps something like a snake slithering around, or a donkey sitting in a chair next to Agnes, or potato reading Shakespeare or something of that nature.
