20 years ago today, I was opening a Mother’s Day card and gift from my older daughter who had it ready before I lost her on 4-30! The gift was a rose red pin! All I could do was sit down and weep. Mother’s Day will never be the same!
Aw. But what about Grandma? I never understood this stuff. Why aren’t Mom and Grandma embracing forever? Has Grandma been tossed to the curb? Why not Grandma and Great Grandma?
Reminds me of a talk I attended. The speaker started off asking the audience to turn around and shake hands with the person seated behind them.. Not very practicable, lol.
I, too, have been wondering about the lack of “Commiserations” updates. Really hope the strip doesn’t go the way of too many others recently on GoComics …
I’m so glad she is able to see her Mom after all this time. I had no idea Mom was that elderly…I did see her one time at a presentation in Southfield, Michigan. Didn’t realize how long ago that must have been now. (((((Huggs))))) for Mom and CG.
Well, THAT’S disappointing to say the very least! :-(
I was expecting a new Cathy Commiserations comic today after C.G. posted on her Face-book page May 10th that she’d be taking the next couple of weeks off to spend time with her 99-year-old mother that she hadn’t seen in a year. Well, that “couple of weeks” was up yesterday and when there wasn’t a new one then, I thought surely it would be here today! :-/
Maybe she decided to spend more time with her mother than she originally planned? I went to her FB page just now and saw no further updates there, so there’s no way of knowing what’s going on with her, or how much longer it’s going to be before we see new “C.C.” drawings again. But hopefully it’ll be soon though! :-)
OK, I know Cathy Guisewhite is taking a break, but at this point there needs to be a notice put up as to when the comic is coming back. This comic has been up for almost a month.
I love Cathy and I miss the comics, but I have to say I look at this particular one every day and love it even more. It still brings a tear to my eyes. I’d give anything to tell my mother one more time how much I love her and thank her for how much she did for me.
OK, it’s coming up on two months since a new comic was published. Either put up a notice saying what’s going on or admit that the comic has run its course and is done.
Taking this one off my bookmarks. It’s getting to be a waste of time coming here to see if anything new has been put up.
OK. The response I got from GoComics was as follows-
“It is not known if the creator will create new content, however, we believe that she is simply on vacation from the strip. That said, the original intent was only for 2020 so there may not be much if any additional content.”
Sooo … somehow I’m not 100% optimistic about anything new here. I’m always hoping, though, and I’ll check every day until we hear something official.
I am so very grateful for all the wonderful Cathy Commiserations that were posted during my time of isolation during this last year. They were always something to look forward to. And since Ms. Guisewite posted on her Facebook page that she was taking time off to be with her mother who is 99 years old, I will continue to hope and pray that everything is Ok with her and her family. Thank you, Cathy Guisewite. Best wishes always
(Also available other places but Spotify is in the family.)
Aack! Cathy, the iconic and much-maligned comic strip by Cathy Guisewite, chronicled the day-to-day tribulations of its titular working woman for 35 years, met with equal praise and derision. In this podcast, Jamie Loftus (Lolita Podcast, My Year in Mensa) weaves between reporting and fiction, putting a cruelly treated cartoon everywoman in context.
Episode 1: Allow me to be the first to advise you: Cathy comics are good as hell — but it’s complicated. Today, Jamie takes a look at what exactly happens in the 34 years of Cathy lore, and it’s way more than you think.
Aackt 2: Who is Cathy Guisewite? – For an author constantly conflated with her most famous creation, would the real Cathy Guisewite please stand up? In this two-part interview, Jamie and Cathy talk about what the journey from unknown diarist to world-famous aack connoisseur was like, and all the misjudgments and road blocks that came up along the way.
Aackt 3: Cathy and American Feminist Backlash – This week, Jamie takes a look at it where Cathy falls in the history of American feminism — and take a look at how the feminist movement has progressed, regressed, and gatekept. Why are feminists frustrated with Cathy?
Aackt 4: The Pages Around Cathy, Part 1 – Cathy Guisewite is often hailed as one of the only women in comic strips, but that’s far from the truth — this week, we uncover her frequently overlooked predecessors going back to the flapper age, and the underground scene that developed when the funny pages wouldn’t address the issues feminists wanted to hear about, Wimmen’s Commix.
For what it’s worth, for those complaining about an artist missing-in-action (or missing-inaction), check out Two Party Opera – last installment 18 Feb 21. Also has his own Facebook page and website, all went totally silent, with no information whatsoever after 18 Feb.
Known is that Brian Carroll, the author, is politically active, running for political offices (and winning some), it remains unknown whether he ran out of time to do the strip, lost interest in the strip, or simply died.
My own reflections on Cathy:
Back in the day, Cathy was never seen without a can in her hand labeled „diet“. As a person very concerned about how badly fat people are treated – often by fellow fat people – that always drove me up the wall.
The original comic strip drove me straight up the wall. I couldn’t think of a more self-centered character than the one presented in the original comic.
From the looks of it, that was corrected in the „Commiserations“ run.
I, too, find these last installments touching. I lost my mom in Jan 2003 and have been heartbroken pretty much since then.
But for those who express the thought, if Ms. G. is quitting the strip, I echo the thought, a final farewell message would have been nice.
Just now saw a posting on Cathy Guisewite’s Facebook page for the first time since May 10th. The reason she’s been “radio silent” for the last 5 months was to help her daughter plan her wedding that had been cancelled twice because of the pandemic. It would have been nice had she told us that to begin with instead of just leaving us hanging without a single word of explanation since then, but now that the wedding has finally taken place, HOPEFULLY she’ll be back to drawing new Cathy Commiserations comics again soon! ;-)
Gretchen’s Mom. Thank you so much for letting us know!! What a relief!! Yes, it would have been very nice to know she was gone for a wedding, and not been worrying about her and her mother. But respecting her desire for privacy, I’m just glad it was for something wonderful and joyous. Congratulations to CG, daughter, and family!
I too have missed this edition of “Cathy.” I’m glad to know she has been on hiatus for a good reason. Yes, I wish we’d all found out sooner the reason why, but it’s her prerogative.
IMHO she’s provided us with many great years of the original strip, as was kind enough to come out of retirement to help cheer us up during the pandemic. I do hope she gives us an update now and again, but everyone deserves their time to enjoy life without a daily schedule.
