For what it’s worth, I went back in the archives for Memorial Day 1996, 1986, and 1976… in all three cases there was no mention of the holiday in the strip – just the continuing story.
For that matter, if you wish to look there was no Memorial Day special strip here in 2016, 2011 or 2006 either. But I finally found this one:
