I never thought I’d say this but I miss live DJs. Most stations around here are pre-recorded. I have frequently passed one along Rt 283 and there are no cars parked there even though the music is being broadcast. It’s amusing when something goes wrong and it’s a half hour before the engineer gets there and fixes whatever is wrong.

Love the classic 1957 Chevy Bel Air style. Bonus points if you can find the gas cap.

WGBW-AM is in Denmark, Wisconsin. Speaking of DJs, though, my brother once heard a DJ late at night who fell asleep at the microphone and was talking in his sleep. He said something like, “…aaaand there’s this group that we’ll listen to in a moment…um…what was it called…what was it called…what was it called…what was it called…” He repeated “what was it called” for about 10 minutes but my brother never found out what happened because he drove out of the station’s range.

I remember when we had a local AM station here that played music and often times the record was put on the wrong speed. They had to sign off at sunset as another station in another State would override the frequency at night. Strange times for sure.

This is when the music just had to speak for itself.

Ok, I have a question… What’s a record? (I know of course, but I wonder if in this digital age of Apple music, Spotify, Pandora; is radio going the way of the newspaper or the rotary phone?) I sync my cell phone with my car, and listen to music that way rather than to the radio itself.

I just retired as a radio announcer and now, the engineer can fix any problem from home 30 or more miles away

Two in a row with Mr Martin’s “help.” This will take some time to recover.

Late night radio was THE best. That’s where I first heard Wolfman Jack, Doctor Demento and King Biscuit Flower Hour back in High School. Oh man.

I miss Don Imus. God knows, I didn’t agree with his politics but the man knew how to do radio.

In the days of ten inch 78s some songs needed both sides. The singer would instruct the listener to turn the record over, often in an extra verse. E. g. Ukulele Ike’s version of “Stackerlee.”

Something is also missing among the air waves carrying the same broadcast on multiple stations. Time for Rock and Roll again. Oh yeah. Time again to replay Gunsmoke and those mysteries.
