Our cat has now discovered the joy of a scratching pad made from gluing 1.5 inch strips of corrugated cardboard together so that the open “tunnel” ends are up. We got one at Chewy.com . It has lasted a LOT longer than I thought when I saw it, and she finds it very satisfying. To the point where she uses the litter box then runs into the other room to get a more satisfying scratch. Also to the point that she no longer scratches the sofa, the rug, the bathmat… much.
One our cats, who was quite smart, got so that he would knock over a small bag of dry cat food and then use a claw to rip an opening in the bag. He would then eat from the opening. I always said he was disemboweling the carcass. Definitely knew how to get his own food. The other cats would then also eat from the carcass.
If the chips hadn’t been on the countertop the dog, Roscoe, would have been suspect. Also, Roscoe would not likely shred the bag in that way. And he wouldn’t have left all those crumbs.
I live at 7000’, high enough in elevation that the atmospheric pressure is noticeably lower than at sea level. As a result, oftentimes chip bags that were packaged at sea level will expand significantly when delivered to the higher elevation / lower atmospheric pressure. Some bags look like they’re about to explode just sitting on the shelf. Muffin would be in for quite a surprise during an attack on such a bag.
Decades ago I babysat for a family whose cat did that to a bag of potato chips. And he had to climb to the top of the refrigerator to get to them. None of my own cats has ever been interested in chips. My current cat will not even eat ANY people food and only one brand of cat food.

if it were Earl, why would he leave the disemboweled chips on the floor?

It does make an entrancing crinkly sound.

I remember having to teach a kitten, who had adopted me, how to use a scratching post.

You can take the cat out of the jungle, but not the jungle out of the cat.

For real fun, hand your cat a roll of paper towels.

ALL cats think alike. Big, little, doesn’t matter.

Roscoe or Earl come to mind, with Earl ahead by a nose in the blame department, because that last piece of pie in the fridge was gone.

So that’s why they make those bags so hard to open. :)
