A “nudum pactum” is a promise that asks no reward (it’s naked), and so if you don’t keep this promise it can’t be held against you. The fact that it’s in Latin tells us that it’s something lawyers use to keep us thinking that we’re so dumb we need to pay them a lot of money to help us. Ipso Facto. Quid hoc ergo propter hoc. Quid pro quo. Nihil obstat. etcetera. Honestly, I think lawyers do this to impress us enough that we think we’re actually worth the humongous (not Latin?) fees they charge.
Scurrilous scribbles of that disembodied head, or mad rantings of a frustrated stand-up comic? We may never know; especially if we don’t crack our dictionaries (physically or digitally). Such is the lifespan of apophthegms….
