The great poet ( and Jesuit priest ) Gerard Manley Hopkins would be in sympathy with Wallace’s critique of

shoes. Hopkins referenced them as one more artificial barrier ( shackles, as Wallace called them )

preventing humans from direct contact with Nature. As in, “nor can foot feel being shod.”

Oh, my Cod?!!!

It doesn’t appear that they are in league with the deep ones, that’s encouraging.

Even if mermaids spy-hopped like whales, they would only see people on the beach (without shoes) anyway..!

Mermaids are pretty smart. They would know….

How would mermaid have electrical devices underwater? Last time I looked, water and electricity don’t work well together.

That one mermaid looks an awful lot like Wallaces dad

Ariel had a hard time remembering the word “feet” and she studied humans.

Well, I dunno, they’re clearly friends with a deep-diving seagull, and they at least have feet, so…

Mermaids are not totally ignorant of the land, otherwise why would there even be stories of mermaids who longed to live amongst those with legs?

I do like that the seagull apparently lives in all worlds with his own air unit to mingle amongst the merfolk.

The Mermaid’s “Legend of the Nuclear Objects” grows:

“Every year, at the summer solstice, these mysterious objects float down to us from the surface. Every year they get bigger in size. They seem to be some sort of clothing, but worn by who, or on what, we have no idea. Perhaps they have some sort of ceremonial significance, an offering of some sort? We consider them to have ritual use. Or, possibly, just more trash thrown into our domain!”

Soon, at least one or two of his shoes is going to be found washed up on a beach somewhere!
